My Approach

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."

~ Carl Rogers

Are you feeling stressed? Being kept awake by unwanted thoughts and feelings? Would you like to feel more alive, connect with others and heal from past hurts? I can help. I offer a supportive relationship through which you can connect to yourself and develop the skills you need to bounce back from life’s inevitable challenges. Embracing your challenges, rather than resisting or avoiding them, can make room for transformation and give you the opportunity to develop a new perspective on your life.

My approach is grounded in mindfulness and self-compassion practices and influenced by the humanistic and developmental models of psychotherapy. Mindfulness-based therapy invites you into a friendly connection with yourself and your moment to moment experience. It allows you to become more "gracious and spacious" even with difficult thoughts, feelings and sensations. You are invited to recognize what you are experiencing as it is happening and to turn toward difficulty with a compassionate attitude and offer kindness to yourself. In addition, I incorporate Somatic Experiencing, into my work with clients by asking you to "put your mind into your body" to feel the many sensations and urgings that are present in the body. This approach is especially helpful when coping with the aftermath of overwhelming or traumatic experiences because it helps us to recognize, allow and care for the deep impact that overwhelm has on the body and the mind in a safe and titrated way. SE also helps us re-negotiate overwhelming experiences by encouraging us to move out of a frozen, disconnected state into more awareness of ourselves through our bodies. From there, we are able to complete in-born self-protective responses of fight or flight and then to move toward the reestablishment of connection with others after having deeply connected with ourselves. If you would like to know more, please visit my website, www.FranLewandoski.com or give me a call.
